History

As a result of the consistent and devoted work from staff and parents the school has grown to be the fine comprehensive College that you see today. Much of the College’s success has been attributed to the strong prayer support and sense of community fostered by both parents and teachers. The College is one of many non-denominational Christian Education National schools throughout Australia. The Christian direction is maintained through active members of the Leongatha Association for Christian Parent Controlled Education. The Association was formed in 1976 and is the foremost decision making body of the College, and may be considered the owner of the College. The early visionaries who set up the Association wanted to see Christian education place a strong emphasis on the spiritual and moral, as well as the academic and physical development of all its students. Their vision was to ensure that biblical perspectives and Godly values would be an integral component of the curriculum, strategic direction and policy formation of the College.

With this vision in mind Leongatha Christian School commenced in 1978 with 19 students in the A’Beckett Street Guide hall. In 1980 classes were relocated from the Guide Hall into new buildings situated on 6.5 acres of land at its Horn St premises and shortly thereafter we ventured into providing secondary education.

Throughout its history the school has increased in physical size. The range of learning programs was extended to provide stimulating and varied learning experiences. A series of capital grants has enabled the school to add a range of general purpose learning classrooms, specialist learning facilities such as Food Technology, Information Technology, creative and manual arts, as well as an administration complex.

When the Commonwealth Government abolished the New Schools Policy, the time was considered right to extend the range of educational services. Under the direction of new a Principal we commenced a VCE program with eight Year 11 students.  A comprehensive Middle School program for Years 6-8 which focused on the transitional years of schooling was also added.  Further additions to the school have included a new purpose built Science room, a chapel relocated and refurbished from Koonwarra and an oval. The Principal, supported by the management team comprising of the Business Manager, Heads of Primary, Middle, Secondary and VCE, oversee the daily task of running the school.

In 2000 a further capital grant combined with parental support saw a new Library, Information Technology, Remedial Education classroom, the refurbishment of student amenities, staffroom and administration take place. In the same year the Association supported the motion to change the name of Leongatha Christian School to South Coast Christian College.

In 2009 a multi-purpose hall was built.  This was made possible through the governments "Building the Education Revolution – Primary Schools for the 21st Century" grant.  It has allowed us to build a facility that will benefit the college and the wider community in a multitude of ways.

This year the building of a Middle School Complex will be completed.  This will give those students in the transition from Junior to Secondary school a multifunctional centre.

We are currently exploring the full breadth of opportunities to further develop the College, enrich the lives of our students and families and share the Good News of Jesus Christ.
